For many years, up until my grandfather passed at the end of last year, my wife and I spent untold hours around the dinner table listening to him and my grandmother, long after the sweet potatoes and fried chicken were gone. We listened to stories of economic depression, world wars, and rapidly changing times. We listened to stories of survival, survival made possible by timeless values like faithfulness, humility, perseverance, community, family, and faith. Songs of Our Fathers was written and compiled in an attempt to honor those values, sometimes reconciling them to, sometimes bringing them into stark contrast with, the modern ethos. I hope you’ll find some encouragement in these songs, or maybe some vital reminders of essential truths, and pass them on to anyone who needs to hear them.
